A digital tachograph is primarily a control device. It aims at recording drivers’ activities so as to check whether they comply with maximum driving and minimum rest periods, as laid down in the AETR agreement. This section therefore contains recommendations on how to better check these drivers’ activities during the roadside as well as company checks. It comprises the recommendations for EU control officers on how to perform checks on drivers coming from non EU-AETR countries. It also includes explanations on how and why they should try to detect tachograph manipulations (if any) as well as guidelines on data download, useful for transport operators and national authorities. This section also contains the so-called attestation of activities that drivers are supposed to provide to control officers under certain circumstances.
