In the European Union and European Economic Area, there will be no retrofitting of existing vehicles when digital tachographs are introduced. Therefore analogue tachographs and digital ones will have to coexist for years.

In the rest of AETR contracting parties, a transitional period has been negotiated by contracting parties in Geneva at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

The date of entry into force of the AETR as modified by the introduction of the digital tachograph is 16 June 2010.
